Ugly Woman
Relator écrit, compose mais il est aussi un incroyable interprète pour les compositions d’autres Trinidadiens. L’un des premiers maitres dans cet art, Roaring Lion (Rafael de Leon 1908/1999) a enregistré cette chanson en 1934. Elle est aussitôt devenue un grand tube international. De très nombreux interprètes l’ont chantée: Sir Lancelot dans une comédie musicale Hollywoodienne Happy Go Lucky (1943), the Duke of Iron et Macbeth the Great, enfin Robert Mitchum l’a enregistrée sur son album de Calypso. Elle a été traduite en français par Claude François avec des paroles un peu moins méchantes, mais surement moins droles. Si, à Trinidad, pour être heureux en amour il fallait épouser une « Ugly woman» « femme laide », en France on pouvait entendre « Si tu veux être heureux pour le reste de ta vie, épouses plutôt une fille gentille » !
